Safety Rules

New Safety Rules for 2005

New state mandated boating safety rules have taken effect. As of January 2004, all personal water craft operators will be required to have completed the Boating Safety Course. This is a strengthening of the previous  law that only required the completion of this class if the operator was under the age of 18. This course is still required for boat operators under the age of 18 but, to be clear, it is mandatory for anyone to operate a personal water craft  of any age. The Carmel Police patrolling Lake Mahopac will be checking for the required Boating Safety Course certificate. Operators of personal water crafts should have their certificate with them when operating on the lake.
Information on safety certificate courses can be found at: www.nysparks.com/boats/yb or by calling the Carmel Police 845-628-1300.

We strongly encourage all who boat and jet ski on Lake Mahopac to operate their craft safely. “Reckless operation” of a boat or PWC is a serious crime punishable under New York State law. More importantly, violating this law puts the lives of swimmers, children and everyone at risk.
